PCAM Victoria - November 2024
Presented at the PCAM convention in Victoria on November 8th, 2024.
You can use the chapter markers in this video to jump around to various topics. Each section is, mostly, a self-contained topic.
Unreasonable Mind (0:02:57) contains a warning about following my, or anyone's, advice.
Importance of Being Bad (0:06:54) Pushing through the fear of failure to take risks on stage, and how often I spill water everywhere.
Rapid Prototyping (0:17:28) talks about how quick experimentation leads to progress. This includes a demonstration of how my Insurance Policy routine evolved into Union Policy.
Be Yourself (0:34:21) talks about my ultimate goal as a performer.
Torn & Restored (0:48:36) shows my work in progress on a new (old-school) simplified paper tearing method.
Trust Your Hands (0:55:50) is about a willingness to change and adapt magic to suit you. I walk through a card forcing procedure made for stand-up shows, inspired by Peter Warlock and Jaun Tamariz.
Many Rooms (1:08:50) is about being the magician you want to be, and not bowing to pressure of expectations from fellow magicians, or magic shop marketing. I show three ideas to clean up your Professor's Nightmare to make it as good as any new trick.
Performing with Presence (1:22:35) is a quick talk about why I choose to improvise in my magic performances.
A portion of this lecture ties directly into my newly published book, Finding the Funny. The discussion of the Insurance Policy and variations (plus a few more not mentioned) are all detailed within, plus the discussion of Performing with Presence at the end.
Learn the techniques to creating inspired moments of comedy, and engaging your audience with the spark of spontaneity. Including four stand-up magic routines, forged in the fires of improvisation, to turn a passive crowd into active participants.
I also talk about some refinements on the Professor's Nightmare, which are all clearly explained (with sharp video!) in the Show Me The Ropes course.
A series of lessons with both classic and original ideas for making magic with a piece of rope. Nearly three hours of video instruction, split into multiple topic-focused tutorials.

PCAM Victoria - November 2024
A ninety minute lecture on the theory and objectives of my live performacne, and how that theory takes form on stage.
Paper tear
I really liked your whole video. It was interesting how you shared that you had been in improvisation and the toastmasters a strong background for being a Magician. I am intrigued by your paper tear Could you give some more information on the specifics of that. It looked like the paper was stronger than just typical notebook paper. The size looks like it was larger than your typical paper. It looks like you use the envelope to get rid of the “evidence”. Is that correct? Thanks for all you do. I’m learning a great deal as I learn more about how you think
Great lecture !!!
This was a great lecture as I was glued to it 100%
